Karine Philippon: Redefining Leadership Through Global Experience, Authenticity, and Purpose
In a profession shaped by constant change, effective leadership requires more than technical expertise. It demands adaptability, cultural awareness, and the ability to build lasting relationships. For Karine Philippon, managing partner for California and Arizona at Forvis Mazars US, these qualities have been central to a career built across borders, industries, and leadership challenges.
From relocating to the United States during the 2008 financial crisis to establishing a growing professional practice, Philippon’s journey reflects the value of embracing uncertainty. Her leadership philosophy combines professional excellence with empathy, authenticity, and a commitment to helping others reach their potential.
Turning Uncertainty into Opportunity
Philippon began her career in France after graduating from Université Paris Dauphine. Although she initially focused on developing her accounting expertise, her curiosity about international markets encouraged her to pursue a professional opportunity in the United States.
Her international assignment began in September 2008, during a period of considerable economic uncertainty. Adjusting to a new country, working in another language, and establishing professional credibility presented significant challenges.
Rather than allowing those difficulties to define her experience, she used them as opportunities to learn and grow. Within a year, she had successfully completed the examinations required to become a U.S. CPA.
That experience reinforced an important lesson: professional development often begins when individuals are willing to move beyond familiar surroundings.
Building a Practice from the Ground Up
A major turning point in Philippon’s career came when she accepted the opportunity to help establish a newly branded Mazars office in Los Angeles.
The decision meant stepping away from an established professional foundation and taking on the risks associated with building something new. In November 2017, the office opened with just four professionals.
Over time, the team expanded to approximately 60 professionals serving clients across industries such as technology, manufacturing, and distribution. For Philippon, the achievement was about more than organizational growth. It was also about creating an environment where employees could develop their skills and envision long-term careers.
Her responsibilities continued to evolve. In September 2022, she was elected to the Mazars USA board and later contributed to discussions surrounding the combination with FORVIS. She now oversees the firm’s California and Arizona practice, supporting more than 100 people across the region.
Authenticity at the Center of Leadership
Philippon’s approach to leadership is grounded in two principles: authenticity and active listening.
She believes leaders should remain consistent with their values, even when circumstances create pressure to conform. At the same time, she emphasizes the importance of hearing perspectives from employees and colleagues who are closest to the work.
This people-centered approach helps foster trust, collaboration, and stronger decision-making. For Philippon, leadership is not about having every answer. It is about creating the conditions in which others can contribute and succeed.
Her international experience also strengthens her approach to client service. Having worked across different cultural and professional environments, she understands how important context can be in complex cross-border engagements.
Empowering Women and Future Professionals
Mentoring the next generation remains an important part of Philippon’s professional mission. She particularly encourages women to trust their abilities, embrace opportunities, and avoid waiting for perfect certainty before taking action.
Her own career demonstrates how adaptability and continuous learning can open unexpected doors. As Forvis Mazars continues developing its presence across California and Arizona, Philippon remains focused on strengthening teams, deepening client relationships, and building sustainable growth.
Her story offers a clear perspective on modern leadership: meaningful progress comes from combining expertise with courage, listening, and a genuine commitment to people.
