Dr Brittany McDonald-Pierce: Building Pittsburgh’s Future Through Community, Equity, and Purpose
Urban transformation is often discussed through the language of construction, investment, and economic growth. Yet behind every redevelopment plan lies a deeper question: who benefits from progress, and who gets left behind?
In Pittsburgh, Dr. Brittany McDonald-Pierce has built her career around answering that question. As Executive Director of Uptown Partners of Pittsburgh, she is leading efforts to ensure revitalization strengthens existing communities rather than replacing them.
Her work reflects a broader vision of development—one where neighborhoods are not simply redesigned but respected, where residents remain central to decision-making, and where growth creates opportunities for generations to come.
A journey shaped by resilience and reinvention
Dr. McDonald-Pierce’s path into community development was far from traditional. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Natural Sciences, she entered the workforce during a challenging period and began her career in a bank’s collections department.
While the role was not where she imagined herself long-term, it became part of a much larger journey. Over 12 years in banking, she continued expanding her skills, earning an MBA in International Business from Point Park University and later completing a PhD in Community Engagement.
Along the way, her involvement with nonprofit boards, volunteer initiatives, and corporate social responsibility programs revealed where her true passion existed: creating meaningful connections between organizations and communities.
That realization eventually led her to launch BMCo. in 2020, a consulting venture focused on helping businesses develop stronger employee engagement programs, social impact strategies, and community-focused initiatives.
Creating opportunities when none existed
Dr. McDonald-Pierce’s career has also been shaped by navigating barriers. As a woman of color building a leadership path, she learned that success often requires creating opportunities rather than waiting for them.
Her philosophy is straightforward: when existing doors do not open, build a new entrance.
That mindset became especially important when she stepped into leadership at Uptown Partners during the uncertainty of the pandemic.
Rebuilding an organization through vision and trust
When Dr. McDonald-Pierce joined Uptown Partners, she inherited a significant challenge. The organization had limited resources, a small team, and the need to rebuild relationships with community members and stakeholders.
Instead of focusing only on immediate obstacles, she concentrated on creating a stronger foundation.
Her priorities included:
Diversifying funding sources
Strengthening community partnerships
Building a capable and committed team
Creating systems for long-term sustainability
For her, leadership is not defined by the circumstances inherited—it is defined by what is built from those circumstances.
Turning abandoned spaces into community assets
One of the clearest examples of her approach can be seen through Uptown Partners’ transformation of a vacant property at 2002 Forbes Avenue.
In 2023, the organization gained conservatorship of the neglected site and partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh to convert it into an affordable homeownership opportunity.
The result was a three-bedroom home designed to provide lasting stability for a family through Habitat’s Homeownership Program, which combines affordable financing, financial education, and community involvement.
When the home was completed and the keys were delivered in 2025, the achievement represented more than redevelopment. It demonstrated how strategic partnerships can transform neglected spaces into foundations for stronger communities.
Leadership rooted in service
Dr. McDonald-Pierce’s impact has earned recognition throughout Pittsburgh. She was named a Woman of Influence by the Pittsburgh Business Times in 2024 and was included in the New Pittsburgh Courier’s Fab 40 under 40 in 2025.
However, recognition is not the primary measure of success for her. She evaluates progress through the lives changed, opportunities created, and communities strengthened.
Beyond Uptown Partners, she continues serving in several leadership roles, including positions connected to community organizations, healthcare initiatives, and public service efforts.
Imagining what others cannot yet see
For Dr. McDonald-Pierce, the future of community development depends on leaders who can see possibilities before they become reality.
She believes the strongest leaders are not those who avoid uncertainty but those who adapt when circumstances change. Funding shifts, priorities evolve, and challenges appear—but vision must remain steady.
Her advice to emerging leaders is simple: a “no” is rarely the end. Often, it is simply a signal to find another path.
The story of Pittsburgh’s transformation is still being written, and Dr. Brittany McDonald-Pierce continues to prove that meaningful change begins with people who are willing to imagine more, build patiently, and keep communities at the heart of progress.
